About Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 was developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and directed by Shinji Mikami. It came out first on the GameCube in January 2005, and a PlayStation 2 version followed that October. The PS2 release, which is the one hosted here, added Separate Ways, a side story told from Ada Wong’s point of view, along with a second set of costumes and the P.R.L. 412 laser weapon. A Windows port built on the PS2 version arrived in 2007, followed over the years by many HD re-releases. The 2023 Resident Evil 4 is a separate remake and not this game.
The story is set in 2004. US government agent Leon S. Kennedy is sent to rural Spain to find Ashley Graham, the President’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by a cult called Los Iluminados. The local villagers are under the control of a parasite known as Las Plagas, and the search takes Leon from a village to a castle and on to an island facility. The game moved the series to an over-the-shoulder camera, and much of its tension comes from aiming carefully, rationing ammunition and keeping groups of enemies at a safe distance. The Mercenaries, a score-attack mode, is among the extras you can unlock.
