About Dune 2000

Dune 2000 is a real-time strategy game developed by Intelligent Games and published by Westwood Studios for Microsoft Windows in 1998. It reached North America on September 4 and Europe on November 12, where Virgin Interactive published the PC version. A PlayStation port followed in November 1999, released in Europe on the 16th and in North America on the 23rd, with Electronic Arts publishing it in Europe. Randy Greenback and James Steer designed the game, Lewis S. Peterson and Kevin Shrapnell produced it, and Frank Klepacki composed the soundtrack.

The game is a partial remake of Dune II and is loosely based on Frank Herbert’s Dune universe. Its story is close to Dune II’s, and it carries on in a later game, Emperor: Battle for Dune. You choose a House and fight for control of spice, the strategic resource at the center of the setting, building a base and an army and commanding them in real time. It has single-player and multiplayer modes. DOS.Zone sums up the reception as mixed: some reviewers noted balance problems, while others called it a great sequel to Dune II.

How it runs in your browser

Dune 2000 was made for Windows, and DOS.Zone runs that original Windows release inside an emulated PC. The emulator is js-dos, DOS.Zone’s open-source build of DOSBox for the web. When you press Play, dos.zone opens in a new tab and loads the game files from its own servers, so there are no discs, downloads or installs, and you don’t need an account. DOS.Zone shows no ads.

The listing carries a rating of 5 from 134 player reviews. It is a single-player listing with no multiplayer room, even though the original game had multiplayer modes. DOS.Zone doesn’t describe how saves work for this game, so check its page before you commit to a long campaign.

Controls and devices

You play with a keyboard and mouse. Once the game has loaded, click inside the window so the emulator picks up your input. The host’s page doesn’t publish a list of keys, so look at the game’s own options when you start.

DOS.Zone shows virtual on-screen controls on phones, but the game was built for a keyboard and mouse, and a desktop or laptop suits it much better. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits players who knew Dune 2000 on Windows or the PlayStation and want to replay a House campaign without hunting down the old discs. It’s also a way to compare the remake with the game it was based on: Dune II runs in a browser too, through an open-source port. For another late-1990s Windows strategy game on DOS.Zone, try Total Annihilation.

Is Dune 2000 Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Dune 2000 online for free?

You can play it free in your browser on DOS.Zone, with nothing to install and no account. The listing is single-player, though, and there’s no online play on it.

Is Dune 2000 the same game as Dune II?

Not quite. Dune 2000 is a 1998 partial remake of Dune II with a similar story, developed by Intelligent Games for Windows. The 1992 original is a separate game, and it also runs in a browser through an OpenDUNE port.

Does Dune 2000 work on a phone?

DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls for phones, but Dune 2000 was built for a keyboard and mouse, so you’ll have an easier time on a computer.
